The Challenge

Empowering Students to Speak Without Fear

The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali, Colombia, sought a strong and engaging identity for its Oral Expression contest. The challenge was to design a concept that not only encouraged participation but also symbolized courage, empowerment, and the art of speaking in public. The branding needed to resonate across diverse audiences while maintaining clarity and inclusivity.

The Outcome

The Megaphone as a Symbol of Courage

The central design element was a megaphone — universally recognized as a tool for amplification. A raised hand holding the megaphone symbolized the courage to speak, while the surrounding hands in different colors reflected diversity, inclusion, and collective empowerment. From the megaphone emerged the contest name, Without Fear of the Public, visually reinforcing the idea of expanding voices beyond silence.

    • A megaphone integrated with raised hands to symbolize courage and expression.

    • Bold, colorful compositions displayed on campus and event spaces.

    • Adaptations for social media and the university’s online platforms.

    • Visual materials such as bookmarks and separators for attendees.

The Concept

Amplifying Student Participation Through Design

The project successfully promoted the Oral Expression contest for two consecutive years (2013 and 2014). The vibrant designs increased awareness and participation, helping students feel represented and encouraged to join. The visual identity became a symbol of empowerment within the academic community, supporting the contest’s mission to inspire fearless expression.

My Design Philosophy
